Menu Coordinator

Activities â€‹

The Menu Coordinator is responsible for preparing the menu for our Wasteless Wednesday dinners based on the rescued food collected. Since we do not know in advance what we will collect, the menu coordinator needs to be able to spontaneously create a delicious meal based on the ad-hoc ingredients to be served to our community.

  • Create a new menu on a weekly basis based on the food that was collected on Wednesday mornings.

  • Buy supplemental ingredients in order to prepare the meal for the Wednesday Wasteless Dinners

  • Explain to volunteers what they need to prepare and cook (e.g. peel vegetables, cook rice, etc.) and work with them to prepare menu items

  • Ensure the taste and presentation of the dinner will show variety in the menu and please guests

  • Work with the Dinner Coordinator(s) to ensure smooth operation between volunteers and guests for our Wasteless Dinners or other events

  • Keep track of inventory of dry ingredients in our storage and inventory of frozen goods and manage the proper storage of prepared food

Expected weekly time commitment: 10 hours/week

  • 5 hours: create menu, coordinate ingredients, instruct volunteers on what/how to prepare food, prepare menu items yourself

  • 2 hours: Keep track of inventory, make shopping lists for things we need to restock, go through inventory and discard expired items, ensure proper labeling of inventory

  • 2 hours: Coordinate with Event Coordinator in case there are upcoming events (outside of Wasteless Wednesday dinners) to plan menus, source ingredients, prepare food items for markets, etc.

  • 1 hour: Work to prepare a TBYW recipe book for easy and efficient menu-planning for events. Also, work with the Content Coordinator to share helpful food-related content on social media platforms to show the ways food/ food waste can be used in new and tasty ways

We are looking for someone to commit weekly to working in this role for the entirety of our second semester of 2025 (September 1 - December 19, 2025).

Your Experience
  • Experience working in a restaurant or kitchen or a strong affinity for cooking

  • Ability to cook for large quantities of guests (ranging between 50-80 per event); can easily measure the ingredients for large scale cooking

  • Comfortable operating industrial kitchen equipment (industrial stoves, large pots and pans, industrial immersion blenders, etc.)

  • Have the SVH certification or be willing to study for the exam

  • Familiarity with food safety requirements for food preparation, cooking, and storage

  • Consistent availability on Wednesdays for our dinners, particularly in the afternoons, and flexibility to support/attend other events where menu-planning is needed

Compensation

While we are a volunteer-run organization, there are certain roles that are essential to the smooth and regular operation of the foundation. The Menu Coordinator is one of these roles and we therefore offer volunteer pay (vrijwilligersvergoeding) for this role. This is in line with Dutch rules, meaning we compensate €5.60 per hour up to €210 per month, with a maximum of €2100 per year.
