What we do

We save perfectly good food from going to waste, give it a new life and share it with our community. With our carrier cycle we collect surplus food from local grocery shops in the Javastraat, from a canteen, and sometimes directly from farmers and producers.

Every Wednesday our voluntary cooks lovingly prepare these rescued goodies into the most conscious, affordable, healthy, vegan choice for a dinner out. Every Monday after dinner we also present you with our co-created programme, such as performances, guest speakers, discussion rounds and screenings. In addition to our Oogst van Oost dinner on a Tuesday, we also host a food cycle market, your alternative source for rescued produce. All our these weekly events are pay-as-you-feel as we aim to make social and sustainable food choices accessible to everyone.

On a less regular basis we give workshops and lectures to anyone who is interested in food waste, food conservation, sustainable practises, activism and more. We have worked with primary and secondary schools, universities, organisations, companies and municipalities. We also offer social catering to other initiatives that we support, from refugee organisations to cultural centres, and we participate in festivals, conferences and other events to collaborate and contribute towards a wider movement towards social and ecological justice.

Testimonials from our Guests

Feeding the Movementā€‹

At Taste Before You Waste, we have been offering a healthy, social and climate conscious alternative to eating out, getting groceries and learning about food for years. We have been sharing practises to reduce personal food waste and created space for content and conversations more broadly on social and ecological justice. We now understand the urgency to go beyond consumption choices and education, to learn from each other how to act collectively and hold our leaders accountable. This is why we have become more directly involved in the climate movement and see our role as feeding the movement.

On the 7th of October we joined the Extintion Rebellion action Rebel Without Borders with our carrier bike full of rescued goodies to keep our fellow rebels going strong. Check out this video by Franziska Dodl!
